Paid Parental Leave is a scheme in which the Government will give a parent 18 weeks of pay after the birth or adoption of a child and two weeks of “Dads Paid leave”, a combined total of 20 weeks for both parents.

The Federal Government will pay the employers of the mother and the father of the child a total of $772.55 (gross) as a reimbursement when both mother and father take paid 20 weeks of parental leave.

If a Business in Wollongong and the Illawarra offers an amount of paid parental leave this employer incentive is in addition to the Federal Government contribution.

Unpaid Parental Leave is 12 months for employees who have or will have, responsibility for the care of a child. A couple has a combined 24 months of unpaid leave, which can be taken by one parent if the employer allows it and reasonable notice is given.

Businesses in the Illawarra and Wollongong cannot unreasonably refuse a request for unpaid parental leave as this could be discriminatory.
